Cotton is a classic choice for bed sheets. It’s durable and soft, and it’s the most popular fabric choice. Polyester is also an excellent choice, but cotton has a nice “hand” or feel to it. If the fabric feels softer than your skin, it’s probably cotton. But if your budget doesn’t allow for 100 percent cotton sheets, you can choose polyester/cotton hybrid sheets. These blends are less likely to wrinkle, but they can cost a lot more than 100-percent cotton sheets.
Thread count is another important factor to consider. Thread count refers to the number of threads per square inch of fabric. Though higher thread counts are generally more durable, this doesn’t mean that it’s better. According to Consumer Reports, “sheets with a thread count of 180 were considered luxurious in the 1960s, but can’t be made today on a loom!”
